3 Steps to Create Lead Generating Copy

Lead generation and client attraction can be intimidating for a lot of business owners. Even though you love what you do and have a passion for it, your mind magically goes blank when you sit down at your computer and try to write a great email or a post that will inspire the reader to work with you.

If you walk away with one thing today, I want it to be this:

Look at each piece of copy you write as a chance to SERVE your ideal client first and foremost. 

Don’t be so hyper-focused on the sales that you forget to serve! When your heart comes through and you serve and help people with your words, they will naturally want to go deeper with you by investing in your offers. 

Serve first, sales second.

Now that we have a foundation of service, I’m going to show you a simple, 3 step process below that will help you create copy that generates leads.

 

Be Clear

People won’t make a purchase that they don’t understand, and you wouldn’t want them to. Clearly define what your offer is. Also, know the direction you’re intending to move people towards. 

When you create a piece of copy online it should serve them first, then guide them towards buying your product or service with the right call to action. For a high-ticket offer that next step would normally be a sales call or an enrollment call. 

 

Create A 10-10 List

Every person that is interested in your copy wants/needs the product or service that you offer. 

Take a few moments to sit quietly and think about the desired result that your readers will gain. What do they want and why?

Write down a list of at least 10 wants. If you’re a dating coach, this list could look like 

  • Waking up with the love of your life every day
  • Starting a family
  • Having companionship…

 

Next, write a list of at least 10 objections or things stopping them from achieving that desire. For a dating coach it could look like:

  • Scared of rejection
  • Being shy
  • Being too busy to date…

Finally, pick one of those things from the list of 20 and write a piece of copy around it. 

Whether you’re creating emails or social posts you will follow the same formula:

1. Telling a story.

Choose a story that is about you or a client of yours. The story can be about someone who overcame one of those obstacles. Or you can write about someone who finally obtained one of the wants in your list and how their life changed by obtaining that. 

2. Give information.

There are endless resources online. You can write a digital piece about free resources online that will help them. It could be a list of your favorite calorie counting apps or books that helped shift your mindset.

3. Teach with actionable steps.

People love following steps. Choose any item in your 10-10 list and give them ways to overcome or obtain that desired result in their life. Serve them!

A Clear Call-To-Action

The most important aspect of your CTA is that people understand what step they’re supposed to take next. Stay clear by only asking for 1 CTA per piece of copy. 

Finally, test your CTA. If you have sent a few emails with a link to book a call and you’re not getting appointments, try asking for a written reply. For example, “If this email/story resonated with you and you’d like to learn more, reply with ME.” 

This allows you to connect with the people who are at least warm to your offer. Then follow up with a link to book a call.
